One of the worst things the sun can send down from the outer space is the ultra-violet rays that come from many directions. These radiate directly from the sun, but are also reflected from snow, mirror, sand and other bright surfaces.
People spending long hours in the sun, have had cataract surgery especially on the retina and those who are on certain medicines like tetracycline, birth control pills, diuretics and tranquilizers increase the possibility of acquiring UV-related eye problems.
Two Types of Damages
There are many kinds of damages one can get from the UV-ray exposure. There are two types of UV rays that pose threat to the human eye. UV-A can hurt your central vision and damage a part of the retina at the back of your eye. The front part of your eye (the cornea and the lens) absorbs most UV-B rays, but these may cause even more damage to your eyes than UV-A rays.

UV rays may lead to macular degeneration, which is the deterioration of the centre of the retina, called the macula. It is a common age-related disease that affects people aged 60 and above.
UV-B rays may also cause some kinds of cataract, a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, which is the part of the eye that focuses on the light we see. This is commonly brought by aging, but is catalysed by sun damages.
Another UV-related problem is a corneal growth called pterygium or surfer’s eye. This growth begins on the white of the eye. The danger comes when the growth eventually blocks the vision. It is more common in people who work under the sun and wind, just like surfers.
More popularly known as corneal sunburn or snow blindness, these results from high short-term exposure to UV-B rays. Long hours at the beach and even skiing without proper eye protection can cause photokeratitis. It can be very painful and may cause temporary blindness.
The sun has many benefits and drawbacks mainly the UV-rays. As long as the sun shines in the morning, the risk of getting UV ray damages will always be present.
